A Free State where rural communities have full access to world-class cinema, and emerging filmmakers build sustainable creative careers.

Stories from the Free State, on the big screen.
26 – 28 November 2026
Hennenman Town Hall, Hennenman, Free State
A festival built by and for the people of the Free State.
From 26 to 28 November 2026, Hennenman Town Hall becomes a cinema. Three days of feature films, documentaries and short films, with the chance to meet the filmmakers behind the lens and to discover opportunities in South Africa’s growing film industry.
The name is a play on Matjhabeng, the municipality whose name speaks of nations converging, and on the voices those nations carry.
For decades, quality cinema has stayed in the big cities, out of reach of rural communities. This festival brings it to Phomolong, so young filmmakers, seasoned professionals, teachers and curious audiences can gather, talk about the stories that shape us, and imagine new possibilities for their own creative futures.

What makes us different
Local roots, national voice
Free State stories sit at the heart of the festival and belong in South Africa’s national conversation. Filmmakers from Phomolong and across the province are part of the creative economy, and this festival gives their work a place to be seen and respected.
Cinema that grows the region
Visiting filmmakers and industry professionals will discover Phomolong, its landscape and its people. The connections they make can lead to lasting relationships and new opportunities for the area.
A stage for new voices
The open call welcomes student projects, first-time productions, independent shorts and experimental pieces by young creatives. Exhibition space is reserved for them, alongside established work.
Create access, skills and opportunity for filmmakers and audiences in Phomolong through cinema, mentorship and industry dialogue.
Work and skills for the Free State.
